Before you start

  • Make the fish first: bend each pipe cleaner into a loop and twist the ends inward so nothing sharp sticks out.
  • Fill a shallow pan or bowl with an inch or two of water, no more.
  • Lay a towel under the pan and set out tongs or a slotted spoon.

Step by step

Let’s play

  1. Make the fish. Bend each pipe cleaner into a loop and twist the ends together. An adult folds any sharp tips inward.
  2. Fill a shallow pan. An inch or two of water is plenty. Set a towel underneath.
  3. Drop the fish in. Pipe cleaners soak up water and sink, so the catch waits on the bottom of the pan.
  4. Fish them out. Start with hands, then offer tongs or a slotted spoon for a bigger challenge.
  5. Sort the catch. Line the fish up on the towel or scoop each color into its own cup.
  6. Dry and store. Pat the fish dry and keep them in a small bag for next time.

The child’s-eye view

Why kids love it

The fish sink to the bottom and shimmer under the water, and lifting one out feels like a real catch. Water play plus a small tool makes it feel like a job, and there is always one more fish to find.

Built into the fun

What they’re learning

Fine motor control

Squeezing tongs or pinching a slippery fish works the same small hand muscles used for pencils and buttons.

Hand-eye coordination

Children judge where a fish lies under the water, line up the tool and adjust when the water bends what they see.

Pretend play

Naming the fish, sorting the catch, and telling a fishing story turns a simple scoop into imaginative play.

Make it fit your child

Ways to change the game

Hands only

Skip the tools and let children squeeze and dunk the fish with bare hands. This is the simplest version for 2-year-olds.

Color sort

Use two or three pipe cleaner colors and ask kids to scoop each color into its own cup.

Add pom-poms

Float a few large pom-poms as bubbles or bait for kids past mouthing, and let them fish those out too.

Real-life fixes

If it’s not going to plan

The fish are too slippery to grab

Bend each fish into a wider loop or a hook shape so the tongs have something to catch, and use a slotted spoon for the youngest kids.

Water ends up everywhere

Use a deeper pan, pour less water, and keep the towel underneath. A shallow tray catches most drips.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

What age is pipe cleaner fishing good for?

It works well from about 2 to 5 years. Younger toddlers can fish by hand with an adult close by, and older kids enjoy the tongs challenge and color sorting.

How do you make pipe cleaner fish?

Bend a pipe cleaner into a loop or teardrop shape and twist the two ends together. An adult should fold any sharp tips inward before the fish go in the water.
