Before you start

  • Thread scarves through different holes at different heights, leaving a good tail to grab.
  • Seat the baby stable against the basket, or lay it on its side for tummy-time pulling.
  • Stuff a few scarves loosely and a few snugly so pulls vary in difficulty.

Step by step

Let’s play

  1. Thread the basket. Poke scarves through the holes at various heights, tails hanging out.
  2. Settle the baby nearby. Sit them beside the basket, or place the basket on its side for supervised tummy-time play.
  3. Pull one, theatrically. Slow tug, sudden release, big reaction.
  4. Let them pull. Name colors or say “all gone” as each scarf comes free.
  5. Thread them again. Reload while the baby watches; older toddlers may want to help push the fabric back through.

The child’s-eye view

Why kids love it

The scarf moves as soon as the baby pulls, then slips free with a visible result. Different fabrics add just enough variety to make repeating the action interesting.

Built into the fun

What they’re learning

Graded pulling force

Loosely and snugly threaded fabrics require different amounts of force, so the baby can adjust the next pull.

Pincer and fist grasp

A flat fabric edge can be held with the fingers, while a bunched end invites a whole-hand grasp.

Cause and effect

Pull here, fabric moves there, and the basket wobbles: every action prints an immediate, visible result.

Ways to change the game

Restuff reversal

Around 18 months, flip the game: now the job is poking scarves back IN through the holes — much harder and just as absorbing.

Peekaboo basket

Hide a toy under the upturned basket with a scarf tail sticking out; pulling the scarf reveals the surprise.

Color naming

Name each scarf's color as it comes free — vocabulary hitching a ride on a motor game.

Real-life fixes

If it’s not going to plan

The baby tips the basket over instead

Weigh it down with a couple of books inside, or hold it steady with your foot — the game needs resistance to work.

All scarves are out in ninety seconds

That's a successful round, not a failure. Restuff while they watch — anticipation is half the game — or hand them the restuffing job.

Frequently asked questions

What age is the laundry basket pull for?

It suits babies who can sit steadily and grasp fabric on purpose, with an adult beside them. Older toddlers can reverse the task and push the scarves back through the holes.

What can I use instead of scarves?

Bandanas, cloth napkins, cut-up old t-shirts, or ribbons with a knot at each end. Anything soft that slides with slight resistance works.
