Before you start

  • Mix baking soda with a little water into a packable paste, tint it, press into molds, freeze overnight.

  1. Brew the pumpkins. Baking soda + splash of water + orange coloring, packed into molds, frozen overnight.
  2. Set the cauldron. Big bowl in a rimmed tray, vinegar loaded in squeeze bottles.
  3. Drop the first pumpkin. Into the cauldron it goes, predictions, please.
  4. Squeeze and watch. Add a little vinegar, observe the foam, then decide where to squeeze next.
  5. Volcano finale. The last cup of loose baking soda gets the full vinegar pour, biggest fizz wins bedtime stories.
